INAUGURAL TOWNSHIP ECONOMY AWARDS & 6TH ANNUAL SUMMIT 2024 SPOTLIGHTS ENTREPRENEURIAL EXCELLENCE
The 6th Annual Township Economy Summit, hosted by the Township Entrepreneurs Alliance (TEA) successfully concluded in Tembisa, Gauteng, on 21st and 22nd November 2024. Under the theme “Inclusive Economic Future,” the gathering brought together township entrepreneurs, corporate leaders and government officials to explore actionable strategies, share success stories and address the unique challenges within South Africa’s vibrant township economy. It focused on 7 key industries driving growth in townships: the Green Economy eKasi, Manufacturing, Transportation, Backroom Market eKasi, Retail & Agriculture as well as Technology & Innovation. Industry leaders and black business pioneers shared their insights, highlighting the importance of entrepreneurship in fostering economic development.
With a sector valued at over R900 billion, the township economy continues to play a pivotal role in driving economic growth and job creation.The Township Entrepreneurs Alliance (TEA) is the driving force behind South Africa’s township and rural entrepreneurial ecosystem. Over the past nine years, TEA has directly impacted over 80,000 township entrepreneurs and provided grant funding to more than 500+ township-based businesses. TEA has a national footprint covering many South African townships.
The Inaugural Township Economy Awards 2024 ceremony recognised outstanding businesses and individuals making a positive impact in their communities. The awards honored entrepreneurs who drive change, innovation and growth in their communities. The gathering featured a compelling lineup of speakers who brought fresh perspectives and valuable insights.
Deputy Minister of Small Business Development, Ms. Jane Sithole, set the tone with her opening remarks, urging action over words. “Your words become empty if they are not followed by action,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of tangible commitments and collaborative efforts to unlock the potential of the township economy.
Lizzy Mogale, Managing Executive: Insights and Advisory at Nedbank- Retail & Business Banking captivated the audience with her inspiring address. Recognising the significance of the venue, she remarked, “We are in a church,” and praised TEA for “taking a space, converting it and elevating it.” Highlighting the transformative moment for township economies, she asserted, “The township economy is at an intersection of growth and transformation. When we come together, we can make an impact.”
Host partner City of Ekurhuleni, Major Nkosindiphile Xhakaza’s address was indeed thought-provoking, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the challenges faced by township businesses while also highlighting their resilience and potential for growth. His message of hope and inspiration, noting that the township economy is “inspiring our communities and countries,” resonated deeply.
Dr. Thebe Ikalafeng, renowned for his global insights reflected on the importance of building connections. “When I go into different countries, I arrive as a stranger but leave as a friend,” he shared, underscoring the power of relationships. He challenged attendees to think big and “go beyond the border,” reminding them that entrepreneurship transcends limits.
Dr. Pepe Marais, Co-Founder of Joe Public delivered a thought-provoking presentation on the essence of businesses, emphasizing the importance of building purpose-driven enterprises that create lasting value.
Sheldon Tatchell, founder of Legends Barber, who also presented the Male Entrepreneur of the Year award, shared his remarkable journey from humble beginnings in Eldorado Park to taking Legends Barber to the international stage. He offered words of wisdom, saying, “Do not despise small beginnings” and “Do everything to get your brand seen.
The star of the show was Godiragetse Mogajane founder of Delivery Ka Speed, who took home three awards. This achievement highlights the founder’s innovative spirit, hard work, and dedication to excellence.
In a heartwarming moment, Thulani Ntshuntshe, CEO of Five Star Fire, took the stage as a distinguished guest. As the first-ever winner of the TEA Kasi Pitching Challenge, Thulani’s journey came full circle, demonstrating the impact and success that can arise from the opportunities provided by the TEA platform. Adding to this remarkable achievement, Thulani was also honored with the prestigious
Chairman’s Award, a testament to his exceptional entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to excellence.
Dr. Thami Mazwai is a distinguished activist, journalist, academic, and entrepreneur whose career spans over five decades. As the founder of Mtiya Dynamics (MD), Dr. Mazwai has pioneered solutions in enterprise and supplier development, with a focus on empowering small businesses and creating sustainable economic opportunities for marginalized communities across South Africa.
Author and founder of Imbizo Shisanyama , Ritha Zwane had a message to the youth entrepreneurs saying, “Don’t give up on your businesses. Be a big dreamer and never be afraid to ask for guidance from us second generation entrepreneurs so that you’re able reach your destination.”
