BAFANA 5-STAR PERFORMANCE IN GQEBERHA

11 October 2024 – Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos  led out his side to a capacity crowd in Gqeberha in a crucial tie against Congo Brazzaville. The starting line up consisted of his tried and trusted starters, captained by Ronwen Williams who was also playing in front of his home crowd.

In a dazzling display of attacking football, Bafana Bafana overwhelmed Congo with a commanding 5-0 victory in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The hosts established their dominance early, going into halftime with a comfortable 3-0 lead.

First Half

From the outset, South Africa showed their intent, dominating possession and pressing high up the pitch. Their efforts bore fruit in the 12th minute when Teboho Mokoena opened the scoring with and later doubled the lead with a  stunning long-range strike that curled beautifully into the top corner, leaving the Congo goalkeeper with no chance.

The match had to be delayed due to a minor crowd issue, but Bafana didn’t miss a step when play got back underway. By the 39th minute, South Africa had firmly taken control of the match. A well-executed corner kick found the head of Mothusi Aubass, who powered the ball into the net, making it 3-0 just before halftime.

Second Half

Congo attempted to regroup after the break, but South Africa continued to dictate the pace of the game. In the 51st minute, Lyle Foster got on the scoresheet himself, finishing off a swift counterattack with a precise shot that beat the Congo goalkeeper.

As the match progressed, South Africa maintained their pressure, and in the 78th minute, substitute Iqraam Rayners added the fifth goal, converting an error from the keeper. The home crowd erupted in celebration, reflecting their team’s impressive performance.

Despite a few late chances for Congo, South Africa’s defence remained resolute, and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was rarely troubled throughout the match.

The two will meet again in the return match on Tuesday in Congo Brazzaville with Broos charges hoping to come back with maximum to secure their spot for next year’s AFCON tournament.
